Traditionally, the society expects men to be the protector of the family. This belief came from the primitive era when (and where) the men were tasked to hunt for food for the family and protect them from wild animals.

Being strong and to show great strength are what they expect from men to protect the family. Being strong, most especially in the physical aspect is very important for a man and this should be seen in his features like strong muscles, sturdy legs and big and meaty chest. This is to fight any circumstances that are bound to attack the foundation of the family.

Now, fast forward to the present generation where men are also expected to do the same responsibilities. This belief and mind-setting has influenced the society’s ideal body type for the men. With this in mind, men, therefore, are expected to have broad shoulders under the dress shirts he wears. He should also possess meaty chest and huge muscles to make him capable of protecting his woman.

One of the physical discrimination the society imposed for the man is their weight, especially when a man is too thin. However, with the help of fashion, a thin man can achieve a fuller and meatier body.

According to Ian Gunter, Ian Gunter Designs, Inc. Wardrobe and Image Consultant, to make a thin man achieve a buff and sexy look, he should wear white custom dress shirts. White mens dress shirts are “classic and does the opposite of black (which makes you look thinner).”  White, on the other hand, makes everything look larger, Gunter said.

Being thin man himself, Gunter suggested others to “stay towards lighter colored shirts if you want to look like you have a buffer body. The light colors seem to help, (but) if you are going… for black, do not wear dark denim or black pants. There needs to be a contrast… and some waist definition so dark on dark is not a good idea.”
